The time has now come for all sections of the community to take full responsibility for their comments, both privately and publicly regarding racism, especially in sport.
Mal Brown and Andrew Johns, men who have spent years of playing and socialising alongside indigenous sportsmen are the last people you would expect to mouth such insensitive, offensive and inflammatory comments for the sake of a cheap laugh from a room full of football colleagues who should also know better.
Since white settlement our indigenous sportsmen and women have been to the fore in Australian sport as great ambassadors with their athleticism, raw talent, mateship and humility. Win, lose or draw.
I can't ever recall an indigenous sportsman / woman making racist comments about white team mates, umpires, officials or journalists.
Ashley Mallett's brilliant book Lords Dreaming, about the the aboriginal cricketers' tour of England in 1868 should be compulsory reading for ALL sportsmen.
The racists slurs, innuendos, cheap jokes, indignity and insults metered out to such sporting legends as Syd Jackson, Doug Nicholls, Nicky Winmar, Greg Inglis el al is a reflection of the ignorance of a small minority of white Australians who probably sat and cheered when Cathy Freeman won gold, when Buddy Franklin kicked a winning goal or Lionel Rose won a World Title.
When will they ever learn, we are one nation, one people, regardless of race, colour or creed...Australian's one and all!
